BLOGGER SPOTLIGHT: Digby

Today the Blogometer talks to Digby, the pseudonymous blogger who blogs at Hullabaloo.

Where did you grow up?
I grew up all over the place, from California to Thailand to Holland to Alaska. My family was military and then military industrial complex.

Where do you live now?
Santa Monica, CA

If you have an occupation other than blogging, what is it?
Not anymore. I'm a full time cheeto eater these days.

What's on your iPod right now?
The new Sade, Green Day, Oasis, Nick Lowe, Bowie, ... more like that. Keep in mind that I'm old ...

What book do you think every person should read?
1984

Please finish this sentence: "When I'm not blogging, you'll probably find me..."
sleeping

What has been your favorite blog post, or your favorite story to write about?
I've written nearly 15,000 posts so it's impossible for me to even remember them, much less have a favorite. The story I most enjoy writing is any analysis of Village culture.

Which blogger(s) do you consider indispensable, if any?
Too many to name, I'm afraid. But my first go-to blog since 2002 has always been Eschaton. There's just something about Atrios.

Who's your favorite non-liberal blogger?
Andrew Sullivan (lately, anyway)

Who's your favorite active politician? Least favorite?
I'm crazy about [Rep.] Alan Grayson [D-FL]. He's smart, savvy and fearless. We need more like him.

My least favorite is [Rep.] Mike Pence [R-IN]. I can't think of anyone who is more sanctimonious and unctuous, which are the two worst qualities in a politician, in my opinion. But Liz Cheney is coming on strong. She's got the worst qualities of both her mother and father.

What has surprised you the most in the past year?
Liberals being surprised that the right immediately regrouped and went on the attack. They're far more temperamentally suited to being in the opposition than at governing. And they enjoy it. Why anyone expected something different is beyond me.

What would you realistically like to see Democrats accomplish before the November midterms?
I'm fairly sure that if health care passes that's going to be it until after the election. If it doesn't, that's still going to be it until after the election.

I hope they seriously take on the financial industry and pass something tough and meaningful. I don't have a lot of hope about that, but I think it's the key to anything else they want to do. If they don't find some kind of populist message, they're sunk in this environment and on the merits it's the single most important piece of business on the agenda.

Realistically, I expect them to move right and try to fudge the differences between the two parties, which isn't going to work. I'll be happy to be wrong about that.

If you could give President Obama advice, what would it be?
I'd tell him to stop coddling the bankers and take the tack FDR took in his Madison Square Garden speech:

"For nearly four years you have had an Administration which instead of twirling its thumbs has rolled up its sleeves. We will keep our sleeves rolled up. We had to struggle with the old enemies of peace --- business and financial monopoly, speculation, reckless banking, class antagonism, sectionalism, war profiteering. They had begun to consider the Government of the United States as a mere appendage to their own affairs. We know now that Government by organized money is just as dangerous as Government by organized mob.

Never before in all our history have these forces been so united against one candidate as they stand today. They are unanimous in their hate for me and I welcome their hatred."

What keeps you up at night?
The thought of this Radical Rump Republican tea party coming back into power thinking they have a mandate to turn this country into a Hobbesian jungle.

I thought it was going to be some boring old post, but I'm glad I visited. I will post a link to this page on my blog. I am sure my visitors will find that very useful.

A little boring to begin with but once I started reading a little more of the post I couldn't stop until I was finished, although it wasn't exactly what I had been seeking, was a nice read though.

I Really recognise what your position in this matter is. Even if I may disagree on a number of the smaller points, I think you did fantastic job explaining it. Certainly beats having to study it on my own. Cheers.
